The CIA supported various Afghan drug lords, such as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who were fighting against the Soviets[5].

Historian Alfred W. McCoy stated that:

"In most cases, the CIA's role involved various forms of complicity, tolerance or studied ignorance about the trade, and direct culpability in the actual trafficking ... The CIA did not handle heroin, but it did provide its drug-lord allies with transport, arms, and political protection. In sum, the CIA's role in the Southeast Asian heroin trade involved direct complicity and direct culpability."

I usually don't put links to articles on posts but I'll make an exception with this one becasue this article gets to the point quite well and a person responding to it has the best idea of all to deal with this jackass that runs wikileaks...

Mr. Julian Assange needs to have his personal information broadcast to the world so he can experience what it is like....... jerk.

i agree with this part:

"I have written a dozen columns, starting last August, opposing the Afghan war because I think our war-fighting strategy, resources and senior civilian leadership (outside the Pentagon) will fail in their objectives and thus needlessly sacrifice the lives of far too many American troops".

i have a feeling this story will come and go very soon. if toops get harmed by these leaks then that is another story. but this war is about the drug trade and perpetuating a false fear of a created enemy.

BB did you watch any of the tv show?

QUOTE (Ligorio Loonie @ Aug 4 2010, 04:57 PM)
"what is the value of this war anyway? why are we there?"

One way to answer the question is to remember that long before the U.S. went into Afghanistan, there was a global civil rights campaign against the Taliban. Here's just one example why:

QUOTE
The Taliban pounded on the door just before midnight, demanding that Aisha, 18, be punished for running away from her husband's house. Her in-laws treated her like a slave, Aisha pleaded. They beat her. If she hadn't run away, she would have died. Her judge, a local Taliban commander, was unmoved. Aisha's brother-in-law held her down while her husband pulled out a knife. First he sliced off her ears. Then he started on her nose.

This didn't happen 10 years ago, when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. It happened last year.

I can't think of a more honorable role for our military than fighting for the freedom of women. Men....you're on your own.
